The Solar-powered Remote Island project was undertaken in order to render an off-grid, sustainable energy solution to the community living on a remote island in Southeast Asia. The island had no access to the national grid, and it therefore required a reliable, independent energy source on the island. The solution was a 15MW solar power system with a 30MWh battery storage unit to ensure that the island's needs for energy were met completely through renewable means. These were strategically located on the island to harness maximum energy, while the battery system was designed for storing excess energy to be used at night and overcast days. This installation generates 50,000 MWh of electricity per year, providing the island with regular and pure energy while reducing its dependence on diesel electric generators greatly. The project has changed the face of this island into one of an off-grid sustainable framework.
In this off-grid solar project, Naenitio opted for materials and technologies that were more suitable to deal with the peculiar challenges presented by a remote island environment. Partnerships with popular suppliers ensured the system was durable yet highly efficient.
In January 2023, the Solar-powered Remote Island project ended with the whole system operational and generating a consistent energy supply for the community on the island. Energy generation outperformed its target and carbon reduction, while the island has now shifted completely from its dependence on fossil fuels. The project received wide recognition because of its novelty in off-grid energy solutions, given its resiliency and adaptability to the peculiar environment of the island. Due to this, the community receives a reliable and renewable energy supply, which decreases energy costs and reduces the environmental impact on the village. Indeed, such an outcome would serve this project as a blueprint for any other potential locations that share the same vision to become energy-independent by means of renewable energy. Naenitio considers this project as one of its biggest triumphs due to the complexity it faced due to the remote nature of the island.
